body paint & rust emergency 850 1995

Paint bubbling, flaking and rust are appearing on the front fenders, the leading edge of the sunroof, hood, and the bottom of the tailgate on my '95 850 wagon. So far, the trust has been in Volvo's corrosion protection (The Volvo shop says "Don't use aftermarket anticorrosion because it'll wash away the better Volvo undercoat - we touch it up when it's in for servicing every fall")

The car will be repainted to repair pollution fallout damage on the roof & hood surfaces (the local body shop recommended a full strip-down to metal) and repair of minor dents & scratches on the sides. The body shop says they'll sandblast the surfaces where rust has started.

Can a car with early-stage rust be refinished, repainted and maintained to look good for 8 more Canadian road salt winters? (Please say YES!) How?

What's the best corrosion protection? Annual trips to the aftermarket rust control spray garage (like Krown here in Ontario)? Or should I continue with faith in the Volvo shop?

What's your strategy to keep the body alive with road-salt winters and how has it worked?
