Hey. I have a 96 855 and the trans fluid is pretty much deep purple / mud brown (automatic). Consensus at mom-n-pop shops is to change it, right? Well, the Volvo -dealer- (one in the DFW metroplex) told me not to change it.
They said since the car had probably never had it changed (100K on the car) since they didn't see it in the service documentation that I shouldn't change it. Something about a computer and changing the fluid? They said it could actually end up worse, since the 'computer adjusts the transmission for the condition of the fluid'. I asked the guy if they went much further with than without fluid changes and he said really they didn't (or not by much).
What do you think? No problems noted with the transmission other than a slight bump when going into 2nd gear. Else is -totally- smooth.
I'd really appreciate input. I'm debating a new transmission here (3K$ US - ouch!).
