AC problem 850 1996

I am having an AC problem with my 96 850. Air works fine and blows cold, then suddenly just goes off. Nothing seems to get it to come back on for quite some time, when it will just start blowing cold again. I checked the system with a gauge and it was a little high, 47psi. Could this be the problem. I just let a little out and brought it down to around 44psi. When it went out the last time, I turned the car off for less than 5 mins. and when I started it, it worked fine. Any suggestions.
