My 1996 850 has always cranked for 5 seconds or more before starting whenever the engine has been off for more than a few minutes. It has always started though.
I have seen references in other Volvo models that imply that the fuel check valve may be faulty and is not holding the fuel pressure in the line after shutdown.
Is there a check valve in an 850? If there is, where is it and can I get at it to check and clean it?
Also, what is the small cylinder in the fuel line just before it comes up into the engine bay from under the cabin floor.
Cheers,
