AC issue...compressor kicks off for long periods of time 850 1995

I live in South Florida, so the AC is always being used...it seems that the compressor just kicks off for long periods of time after the car gets to normal running temperature, for no apparent reason. The AC works fine for about the first 5-10 minutes after starting the car. I have checked the pressures and the compessor cycles on and off at the proper pressures. When on the highway this does not happen and the AC works fine (plenty of wind cooling down the system). I know the compressor has a thermal switch to cut it off...could that be faulty? Can that thermal switch be tested, or does the compressor have to be replaced? It is even compressor related or another problem? Thanks in advance for any feedback!
