'New' Used Car Ideas - Opinions wanted

I am looking for a used car to replace my 240. Ideally I want something newer (MY 2000 would be great), safe (would love to have side air curtain), good mpg, price around $15K ($10k is better), and possibly room for a surfboard inside.
I've considered:
940 Turbo Wagon (possibly, but would like something a little newer, I already have two cars I need to tinker with)
850 or V70 Wagon (good mileage, this would be my first choice but worried about repair costs, or spending more time DIY.)
Subaru Wagon (doesn't get that good of mileage?)
Honda Accord or Toyota Camry (good mileage, low operating costs, but can't fit a board inside)
Honda CRV or Toyota version


Any thoughts?
