Had a similar problem where my 96 would start sometimes and others it would not. Mine would do nothing and I heard nothing from the starter as far as contact noises and the usual electric clicks you hear when the car starts. So it turned out to be an easy $40 fix by changing the electronic ignition switch located in the steering column. It's a plug and play type item and worth putting in before spending a lot of money on a starter or more diagnosis from your dealer.
