Accelerator pedal is behaving badly V70-XC70

I have a friend in New York State with a 1998 V70 T5. Last week he got in the car to go and the accelerator pedal was not working. The car would start but when he pushed the pedal it offered no resistance and the engine just sat there and ideled. The car was towed to the dealer where it functioned perfectly. The dealer drove it for several days and found no problems. Any idea what's happening?
