Insturment cluster removal 850

I need to remove the instrument cluster in the 1996 850 GLT to have the odometer gear replaced. The removal looks pretty straight forward, but I would like to know if I need to disconnect the battery prior to removal? The directions I have don't mention if the battery should be disconnected. Also, is the car drivable without the cluster installed????

Any input would be appreciated.
