auto lock keys

I'm fairly new to this site. (forgive me for asking this question for a second time, but the problem continues.

I just bought a 2001 XC. It has 65,000 on it and runs fine. My only problem is the auto lock keys don't seem to work.

We changed the batteries but found out the batteries in the units were just fine.

The keys work some of the times. (about 10 to 15% of the time.)

I don't know if they make the seats adjust or not. (haven't worked enough to check out)
I called our local dealer (350 miles away) and he said it didn't sound like the key unit itself.

What is the range for a good unit? (my Jeep Grand Cherokee has a range of about 100 yards.

Also, is there a point or a place you should point the clicker at inside the car?

Any help will be greatly appriciated.

(already got my oil filter wrench through this site, so I'm way ahead already.

Thanks to all in advance. Terry Johhson
