Brakes soft and spngy...Brake rotors or Master cylinder ?? 850 1995

i am trying to find out how to determine if the master cylinder is bad is just my rotors and pads. The brakes are starting to screech and I am hearing metal while trying to come to stop in slow traffic. The brake pedal also seems very soft and seems to be going down more than usual. THe car takes longer to come to a stop and feels if I step on the brake it seems to speed up ..

i read somewhere that it might just be a matter of bleeding the system instead of replacing the Master cylinder.

where should I be checking for master cylinder problem..
