850 oil confusion 850 1996

Where I live in California, the next six months will bring temperatures from the high 90s to the low 20s, and that's assuming we don't go to the snow (where it will be zero) - all this Fahrenheit. I'm getting ready for my first oil change since we bought the car in the Spring.

My owner's manual recommends 10W-30 for this temperature range. The Haynes manual recommends 20W-40, which is not available at the local auto parts stores, though 20W-50 is. What's best?
