Squeaky Brakes S70

Am curious as to any suggestions for eliminating the loud squeaking/screeching noise on my 98 S70. I bought the car used and brakes were very loud whether stopping slowly or with regular pressure. I had new brake pads installed about 6 months ago(not by a Volvo dealer) and was told by the mechanic that the squeaking should stop. The noise did not stop and now it's getting louder. Has anyone had similar problems? What should I do?
