Normal for an ETM failure? Are all the parts the same?

My car (02 S60 T5 64k MT) seems as if it experiencing an ETM failure. My wife was driving it yesterday and, all of a sudden, the idle got rough. For the past few months I have _sometimes_ felt a slight stumble/hesitation during acceleration. The car is going to the dealer tomorrow so I can get their assessment. What troubles me is that the interior lights were also pulsing and the RPM stays steady, even during the rough idling. Is this normal with an ETM failure? The lights pulsing like that makes me suspect a voltage issue or do I have two problems?!?

I have read been reading about the Marelli ETM's in our cars and am a little confused about something. I have heard that all Volvo ETM's are essentially the same since 99 but I have also heard that the 99-01 parts are the same and that they redesigned the part for 2002 and newer cars. Is this true? If it is, I guess I have one of the older parts on my 02.

I was also curious if people have been successful at getting Volvo to cover the repair under the 70,000 mile emissions warranty. It seems to be a valid argument given that it would be difficult for them to say that the car runs efficiently with it idling so badly.
