Check Engine Light 850 1996

My Check Engine Light came on and the diagnostic tool shows nothing wrong with the engine. One dealer said to just drive it that way, but then I won't know when there is a "real" problem.
Is there any troubleshooting method to see if it can be fixed? I understand that it may cost up to $1500 to replace the computer?
Any suggestions.
