knocking noise from passenger side? 850

The weirdest thing happened today, I was just driving along, lightly accelerating, when I heard a knocking noise from the passenger side of my car. Pulled over, got out, looked around, nothing. It didn't start back up again. What is that, does anyone know? I've only had my 1997 volvo 850 glt for two months.
On another note, I also had smoke come out of my sterring column a week after I bought it. Only a fuse was blown (ignition to turn stereo on) and had it checked out, got a $90 bill with the answer " I have no idea". ANyone know about that either?
