Whining noise in CD S70 1998

Hey Guys and Gals:

The little lady's 98 S70 with 84k on it has developed a high pitch whine in the CD. Any thoughts on what that could be? Is the player dead? Do I need some kind of filter? It works fine but it just has this high pitch in the music. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
