Eaten wires?

I got an email from a relative that said that a friend (don't urban legends always start this way?) has had three Volvo wagons, and squirrels have eaten wires in all three. Their mechanic claimed this was common. Something about the organic nature of the wires...

I have been on this board for a few years now, and don't ever recall seeing someone report eaten wires. Has anyone else seen or heard of this phenomenon?
