What impact has Ford had on Volvo? S70

A friend tried to tell me the other day that Volvo is no longer Volvo since it was bought out by Ford much the same as the GM?Saab debacle.

Are the Volvo's basically Fords now and is it true the safety and reliability have gotten worse since Ford entered the picture.

I am thinking about buying a 70 series for my son but am concerned about the issues above.
