The same generic Ford C1 platform is under the new Ford Focus, the Mazda 3 and the Volvo S40/V50. Oddly the S80 platform is under the Ford Five Hundred/Freestyle (obviously they pulled some S80 things out to cut the price to Ford levels).
Are Volvos any less safe since Ford? I doubt it. A 2005 S40, even with ford underpinnings, is probably safer than a 1993 850. Technology always evolves.
In the US at least, Ford seems to have taken over Volvo's parts distribution system and it's becoming a nightmare. They're definitely not trying awfully hard to suport the older cars. (7 years is "older"???)
