RPM gauge problem? S70 1999

My RPM guage (sorry for the spelling) was always at 1 when the the car was turn on without moving. But today I noticed the the meter went down two lines. Its under the number one. I don't know much about cars in general so I dont know what this means exactly.
My car is at 65k miles and the service light always goes on when I start the car (but eventualy goes away). I'm wondering if the light is indicating that it needs its 60k service or that it has something to do with the RPM meter.... or maybe even both?
I live near NYC but two weekends ago I drove to Columbus, OHIO and back, and last weekend I drove to Worcester, MA and back. I wonder if these two long trips had anything to do with it?
Again, I'm clueless when it comes to cars and apologyse if I sound dumb, but I would just like simple answers to whats going on here. I would really appreciate any insight or suggestions you can provide. Thanks.

PS: Should I take my car for the 60K service check? Is it really necessary? Do they do important things in this service?
