'95 Volvo 850 Fan Problems, Oil Issues 850 1995

My beloved volvo is under the weather. The fan motor is making horrible noises and cannot be used. I also have a horrible smell in the car - which began after the fan went kapoot. When the fan first starting making this horrible noise, there was a burning rubber smell.

ALso, I went to check the oil and I needed to add 5 quarts! What gives? There's been no oil spots under the car - no leaking that I've noticed. Car has 169K miles and has been running great until the fan issue and now low oil.

Any suggestions?
