95 850: shifting hard, tranny flush or just drain and add Lucas 850 1995

I stopped at a tranny shop today and they mentioned solenoids and said they can run a test next week? I read about the metal balls that get stuck. So my question is do transmission-flushing-machines work for $99? Should I just do the drain and fill with the kit? I get a pretty bad clunk going from P to R, so much so I had to replace an engine mount. The tranny fluid is full. I added Lucas a year ago and it helped, any one else try the Lucas tranny additive? When I check my fluid it seems thin and a little brown, is that normal. ALl else is well except that darned cracking leather.
