Ignition - gear shift - brake pedal interlock 850 1996

Arabella, our 1996 850, has developed an intermittent problem with the feature that requires you to have the ignition turned on and your foot on the brake pedal in order to move the shift lever out of "Park." On occasion, it just won't release.

My wife says she's observed that turning the key over (that is, removing it from the ignition switch and flipping it 180 degrees before reinserting it) will solve the problem. ??

Help! How many different sensors are involved here? How can I diagnose the problem?
