headlight adjustment S40-V40

Be careful with this--the adjustment, if not powered, as I think it is on euro models, is a mere screw with a white plastic crossed grip on the end, so you can turn it with your fingers. Be gentle; the problem I had with it is that all the white plastic stuff on the car has deteriorated and become very brittle. My previous servicing dealer, Bergeron Volvo in Metairie Louisiana (Katrina should have focused on them) replaced one of many burnt headlamp bulbs and managed to crack the "nut" or insert portion of the adjusting mechanism, such that the screw would no longer stay put. I noticed the light seemed to shake over bumps and wasn't aimed properly. Bergeron's tech said it was properly adjusted and nothing was wrong. When I got fed up with the dealer breaking things on my car (try 140 ft lbs of torque to remove the engine oil drain plug), I started changing the bulbs myself and when attempting to correct their alleged adjustment of the lamp, was rewarded by the white plastic parts coming apart on first touch. I had to assemble some pieces of rubber hose onto the screw to jam into the hole in the rear of the headlight housing and hold the whole mess in place. Now it is plenty stable at least for a while. Another piece that appeared to be made of the same white platic material was a T in the vacuum booster pump that assists braking during warmup--it just came apart, with no contact at all--suddenly lost vacuum to the brakes while on an elevated, urban highway with my 10 year old--nice safety Volvo!! Dug out the fractured pieces and replaced with a $.50 brass plumbing fitting--bet that won't come apart by itself. Sorry for the long response, but as usual, everything with a '00 s40 seems more complicated than it should be. Best of luck.
