Blower motor problem? '93 850GLT

So, it's been a cold and rainy week here in New England, and for the first time since owning this car, have needed to run the heat in earnest and clear the interior windows of fog. Waxy, crayon-like smell from the heater. Blower won't blow when asked, but will sometimes blow when not asked, with the dial at 0. Indy mechanic, by verbal description of the problem, suggested it's the blower motor, said that's common to these models, and quoted a $240 part. So, with labor, I'm looking at tossing another couple of hundred $$$ into my "new" car. (It's black, and the "black sheep" description of this model found in another post keeps haunting me.) Meanwhile, before my appointment next week, does anyone else have ideas of what else it might be? Thinking of costs, of course. Thanks.
