Programming alarm fob 850

I've just purchased a spare alarm fob for the GAII system fitted to my 850 estate but the alarm will not recognise it. I've followed the procedure for programming a new fob into the alarm (switch ignition on 5 times to prime alarm system, press either button on fob to send signal) but it is refusing to recognise the new fob. I have tried swapping the batteries with the existing fob, existing fob still works but new fob still not recognised. Anyone got any ideas?
