99 Volvo 2.9 Warning lite S80

After driving about 10 miles the orange general warning lamp with ! comes on and the text message says 'engine system fix next service'. Everything works good except the cruise control turns off when the warning lamp comes on. It has just over 64,000 miles. The fuel cap is tight and the sparkplugs and air filter were changed recently.
Any suggestions would be appreciated before I take it to the Volvo dealer.
I do not have a tool to read the codes. Is there a way to read codes without the tool?
