Tail pipe hanger 850 1997

The hanger that used to hold the exhause tail pipe has rusted away. The mechanic says I need to replace this because the only thing holding the exhaust system up is on the front end of the muffler and it might be putting undue stress on the rest of the exhaust system. But.. it has been like this for at least a year. Should I follow his advice?
