Bad MAF? 850

Recently pulled code P 0170 (running rich-bank 1) on my '97 850R. It was idling a little rough w/ white exhaust smoke. Stalled at stop light a couple of times w/ a/c on. The rough idling seems to lessen with a/c off. I looked for cracked vacuum elbows, found none. Replaced plugs, wires, rotor a few months ago. Has always blown carbon out exhaust on start-up. Has anyone experienced these same symptoms? If so, what fixed it? From searching here & on volvospeed looks like it might be bad MAF or faulty connection. Will try the connection fix soon, but if that doesn't work will probably try new MAF. I'm an hour at least from a qualified Volvo tech and would like to avoid the hassle if possible.

Thanks
