Blower motor problem? '93 850GLT

Hi. Thanks to all for your input. The car is at the mechanic's. I am a total babe in the woods here. The importance of reading the codes is often stressed, but how do you do that? Is it something I can do without a lot of knowledge/skill/special tools? Surely, this is something the mechanic would know how to do? Would do? (Specializes in Volvo's and foreign cars.) Saying today that he needed more time to discern the exact cause of the problem, I brought a copy of your other post, Chris, and showed him your point about the ECC controller, etc. He is looking at a possible heater core problem, possible blower motor (this one was replaced in 2002). After looking at your post, he assured me that the EEC controller, power stage, etc. would be part of the inquiry. I feel so at the mercy. Does anyone know a great Indie near Norwood, Massachusetts? Thanks again to all for your feedback!
