Dead 96 850T - cranks and sparks but won't start 850

The fast grocery-getter is dead in the driveway.

I made a short trip, about 5 miles, parked the car in the driveway, and the next AM it would not start.

In the past, severl times I have had this problem where you make a "short" run, like backing it out of the garage, then shut it off, and it won't start. In that case you could just crank the 'ole SOB for about a minute straight and it would fire...run rough for a few seconds, then work OK.

But this time it's different, and way beyond any idosynchrosies I've seen before.

I had this to a mechanic for some other problems a few months ago, and after fixing those (radiator, alignment) he suggested I change the plugs, wires, rotor and cap. I did this (all Bosch parts) and still no-start-y.

I did pull a plug and there was spark.

I can squirt a little starting ether into the air cleaner and it will fire...but not run for more than a few seconds.

But I disconnected the fuel line at the injector manifold, cranked the car over again, and look ma, NO GAS.

I suspect the fuel relay, fuel filter, or fuel pump?

Fuel filter is easy. Relay is $50 and no-return. Pump is $400, looks like a PITA to replace and gain, no return.

Question: Does this car "sense" that there is an open fuel line, and thus close the fuel relay (safety, of course) shutting off the fuel pump?

Follow-on question: If so, how can I check that I have fuel pressure?

'nuther question: Is there a procedure to test the fuel pump relay with a Volt-Ohm meter?


I need to get this fixed. Avis is gving me Chevies, for God's sake. Plus, I need to go get groceries! Really appreciate your help!
