Power window switches stick-Y (not stick-ING) V70-XC70 1999

First I thought the previous owner drooled her morning latte over them, but on closer examination after attempting to clean them, it appears the gray coating is turning to a yucky, sticky gunk!

My indie mechanic has never seen anything like this.

I know I can remove the sludge completely with acetone, but that leaves me with the underlying white plastic.

Do the switch tops pop off like keycaps on a keyboard?

If so, I can repaint them gray and reinstall. Or cannibalize a defective, but good looking switch pack.

Anybody ever run across this problem?
