Oxygen Sensor AAARRRGGGHHH! 850 1996

I just replaced the front oxygen sensor on my car after the check engine light showed the error code "oxygen sensor slow response (bank 1 sensor 1)" several times and finally the same sensor not responding. I took the numeral one to mean front sensor, and I am told that the front sensor is the most likely to die anyway.

I'm now getting exactly the same error code after a week's driving. Help! Did I replace the wrong sensor? Are there other causes for a slow response?
