Hose from radiator to mysterious box 850 1997

Good day all.
Recent to the family is a '97 850 GLT. Under the hood, when facing the engine compartment, there is a black box to the left up against the fender. There is a plastic hose running to it from the radiator and exiting it to the fire wall into the passenger compartment. Does anyone know what this box is? The hose leading from the radiator is ribbed and has cracked and has small holes. I just need to know the urgency that this needs to be replaced.
