euro roof rail - for kayak transport 850

I've read here that you can install an XC euro roof rail for 850, since they are sturdier than non-XC roof rails, and still fit regular 850 wagon.

Do I get euro rails made for 98-2000 XC's, or made for 2001+ XC's?

This is for transporting 2 kayaks, among other things.

Also, if I don't get the euro rails and get just cross bars that get installed in the above-door screw holes, that gives me just over 2' separation. If you transport kayaks, do you feel that's sufficient? (Thule/Yakima suggest 2'+ separation, but that doesn't 'look' enough on kayaks 16'+).

Thank you.
