Headlight Connector Failure V70-XC70 2002

Is it just my '02 V70, or has anyone else noticed that the black plastic headlight connector plugs are made of plastic that doesn't seem able to stand the heat generated by the headlights? Within the past 3 weeks I replaced first one low beam and then the other. The first connector was cracked but intact; the second crumbled in my hand as I attempted to unplug it.

The metal slide on connectors aren't affected, and given the outside cover on the back of the whole assembly, it seems safe enough without the plastic plug around the connectors, but presumably it's there for a reason. And replacing that plug looks like a bear. It's hard enough to see and get your hand in to replace the bulb (without removing something else in the engine compartment), let alone attempt a rewiring job.
