Reverse Lights on my 850 Acting Up 850

my 97 850 is having some difficulty activating the reverse lights when the car is in reverse.

there is some play in the shifter (i can move it slightly forward/backward when its in a gear. the car shifts fine and drives fine. i dont have the flashing orange arrow on the dash to indicate the pnp switch is bad and the car is not stuck in 3rd gear. i dont have a check engine light on.

am i safe to rule out the PNP switch or is that the problem? it could be out of alignment a bit but i also thought it could be a bushing in the shifter box under the center console. any help or advice would be much appreciated on this.

thank you.
