cel '97 850 code P0116 temp sensor out of range ?????

Have a '97 850glt which has a P0116 code from the check engine light. I think it was temp sensor out of range.

It's my wife's car, so I haven't driven it much. Took the car out last night, and the temp gauge has been coming up to the 4pm mark (which I think is low but can't remember). We have the blasted auto heat which does put out heat if turned all the way up.

I was guessing a thermostat or ECT sensor. ECT had a good cold reading, and according to the mechanic, the radiator fan is kicking on early at about 140-160 degrees, so he thinks the ect is working to say the temp is off because He thinks the fan is keeping it from coming up to temp. Is there a separate sensor that turns on the fan?

Any other ideas or am I missing something else?

Thanks
