These are the common failures on the 01s
- upper motor mount (fail in < 30k, OEM part $50, new improved more durable part (for newer models but fits 01s) = $75, labor = 1/2 hour)
- upper spring seat (for each side: part $25, labor 1/2-1 hour, I think mine failed at 75k. May need alignment afterwards)
- brake booster (fails at 60k+, $500 part, $250 labor)
- ETM (fail in 40k+ (people experience vary) volvo is replacing for free under extended warranty. But they do have to determine this is the problem first. For me, early stage of failure was very intermittent and not sure dealer would have been able to read an error code)
- light bulb seems to go every 20k. $10+ each and easy DIY.
These seems frequent as well
- sunroof rattles. easy DIY fix.
- electronic climate control temperature sensor fan spindle gets jammed, easy DIY fix.
People also report transmission issues on 01s. Heard there was software upgrades during early production. By now, most/all 01s should have these. Not sure if there were differences in mechanicals. I've not had any problem with my 01.
02+ V70 turbos have the new ETM that we haven't heard much failures yet. I read somewhere that none turbos has the poorly designed ETM through 03?
Brake booster seems to have the same problem in 02s.
Spring seat parts the same through out 01-04 (maybe 04+, can't confirm). I'd guess the failure is inherited unless Volvo redesign the parts around it.
Dealers charges $95/hour so some of these DIYs will save you some money depending on your ability/interest.
