Engine rev limtier in 3rd/4th gear on automagic tranny S40-V40 2001

on my 2k1 S40
went driving last night to drop someone off at the airport
i was manualy shift(ed) into 3rd gear
was running 3500rpm and 48mph and was merging into fast moving trafic
went to trounce on the gas and it pulled hard to 4k were the engine appeared to hit a rev limiter, much like when the DSA gets activated but the DSA light stayed off
my volvo mechanic claims that there is a rev limiter for 3rd and 4th on the 5spd when manualy shifting the transmission
this just sounds quite strange and doesn't seam to have a function, because the stock shift points are 5k+ when in drive

would like some confirmation on this
otherwise if someone knows this is clearly wrong what should i have him look at to try to figure out the cause
