rear calliper piston retraction on 440 2.0 GLT (1995) 400

I'm having difficulty retracting the piston in the rear brake calliper of my 1995 440 GLT. To fit new pads the piston has to be retracted manually using a screw thread driven by an allen key. In my calliper the screw thread has turned a few times but the piston doesn't appear to be moving back in. Can I fix this on the workbench if I take the calliper off the car, or is ist time for a new calliper? Any advice appreciated!

Owen from Scotland
