Leaking Gearbox?? V40 Help S40-V40 1997

Hi
I have noticed in the last few days oil leaking on the Driveway. Took it to the Garage and was told that the gearbox might need replacing. Ouch, i thought. I have not noticed any other symptoms, like noise or slipping gears etc.
Can anyone give me any advise please? are there any symptoms i should be noticing to warrent a replacement gearbox. Is this a common fault on V40's?
Could the fault be anything else, like a gasket that needs replacing instead, if so how can i tell the difference.
Heres hoping for a silver lining.......

Oh Car is a V40 1.8 Manual

cheers
steve
