The buy-out occurred in '99.

Ford's influence on Volvo engineering, if any, wouldn't be present until the new S40/V50, the re-designed S80 and newer S60/V70.

Volvos have never been known for their outstanding reliability. They are, however, justifiably famous for their safety and longevity.

Whether Ford's stewardship changes this remains to be seen.

I agree that the '97 850 had the best overall quality of the 850/70 series.
