850 starting WARNING !

From what I've read I made a classic starting mistake with my GLT , in that I started it and then turned it off after only running the engine for a few seconds ,for the last 2 weeks she's refused to fire and Ive checked / changed everthing from spark plugs to even removing the cambelt thinking the timing had moved !even worse paying out for a moblie mech. who was just as baffled as me !, and how did I cure her ? half a cup of oil down each plug hole , she spluttered into life , blew out clouds of smoke which then cleared and she ran perfectly ! I just don't believe is , this an 850 fault or what ?
Dave
