wiper arm appears not to be bent but is running in wrong plane, not loose on shaft 850 1997

I searched but did not find the exact problem. The wiper arm on drivers side leaves the surface of windshield half way cross the wipe. This has gradually gotten worse so I am guessing wear or something is coming loose. Shaft nut is tight. Wiper is free. It appears that the shaft is not in the correct plane in relationship with the windshield. Is there an adjustment on the shaft mounting? I have not pulled the cover yet. I am aware that many people have the nut holding the arm on come lose and the arm flops around or gets out of time, this is a different proplem. Any advice or links would be helpful.
thanks
