850 starting WARNING !

its to do with the oil filled tappets..no really!

basically the oil prsure doesnt get high enough, then oil gets behind the tappets and the valves dont close properly..well known issue!

from volvo owners club uk site - owners register

"I've not heard any more about the power loss on start up problem, from any of you, that I mentioned last time. I've not heard any more from Volvo Car UK either, but if and when I do, I'll let you know. I experienced the phenomena again myself, a while back, fortunately when at home, when I had cause to run the (2.0 litre, 20 valve) engine on my car just for a few moments. Later, it just refused to start. Even after removing and ensuring that the spark plugs were clean which they were - the engine still refused to fire. I had to keep 'spinning' the engine over - for some while - before it gradually started to show signs of life: Eventually it fired up and all cylinders came on. The moral just seems to be 'DON'T run the engine just for a few seconds, then turn it off they just don't like it! Apparently, the valve lifters 'stick' up and there is virtually no compression. Only after prolonged spinning over of the engine, will they gradually free off and allow the engine to regain compression"

th approved technique is to floor the accelerator and turn the engine over until it catches!

i am guesing the oil raised the compression high enough that the escape past the valves was overcome by the sheer raising of the compression due to half the cylinder being full of oil..a VERY dangerous game by the way - too much and you could of locked the engine up (ouch!)

(working it out if you havea 2.5ltr 5 cylinder engine you have 500cc per cylinder, call it 10:1 compression that 50cc compressed.....50 cc isnt much oil! (about 10 teaspoons!)....)half a cup is way more than i would put near a cylinder without spoinning it up with no spark plugs in before trying to start it - this is an old trick for motorbike storage, fil lthe cylinders with oil for storage, pull the sparks and kick it over ...oil comes flying out of the spark plug holes and in 9 out of 10 case over your jeans - but the cylinders dont rust!
