Tranny gone 850

I'd second MIJs advice. Buy a case of ATF, 5' if 1/2" ID clear vinyl tubing from Home Depot and an empty milk jug marked in qts. The whole procedure won't take 30 mins and you won't get your hands dirty. Go to IPD's website and download the instructions for their tranny flush kit or the procedure is well documented on the board. Chances are the car has the same ATF that came in it from the factory. The early 850's has no internal filter and volvo didn't recommend changing the ATF (bad advice). If flushing helps, wait two weeks and do it agaain. Sure beats $1500. if it works and is cretainly worth trying.
