Tranny gone 850

I have a guy who is certified Volvo mechanic who I trust he said it is going and approximate replacement cost $1500.00. I feel like that's a bit risky with the car being a 93. I mean I liked the car it drives great is solid and looks great too (has been garage kept) I do agree it's a bit early for tranny problems. The fluid was bright red, clean, full etc. Wow it's a tough decision one I need to make soon as my wife needs transportation. We looked at a 2005 S40 this weekend very nice (yes a bit pricy) we're going to make a decision soon. Thanks for the replies will keep everyone updated on the outcome.
