For what it's worth, there is no flashing arrow lighting up on the dashboard, and the reverse and brake lights function properly, when they're supposed to. The error code is 114 (break in drive mode selector circuit), I'm going back to the archives/ internet to do some more research.

Started looking through the archives, do any of the symptoms mentioned earlier sound like a failing PNP switch? The problem only seems to be in first (low) gear and reverse.
